Como Zoo Conservatory

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in Saint Paul contacted Quality Structures to overhaul the aging rack-and-pinion vent systems on their historic conservatory. The Sunken Garden wing in particular required a complete replacement of motors, drive shafts, and all associated drive assemblies, and the work had to be completed during a tightly scheduled public closure window.

We bid on and were awarded the Sunken Garden ridge vent portion, supplying all new materials. At the same time, Albert J. Lauer held a contract for vent repairs on other wings of the complex; they supplied the materials while Quality Structures provided the labor. We completed both projects in a single intensive week.

The crew worked long days in 100-plus-degree heat and high humidity, arriving at 5 a.m. to stay ahead of visitor hours on the wings that remained open. Despite the extreme conditions and compressed schedule, every system was repaired and returned to full operation well ahead of the deadline. The conservatories now stay climate-controlled and comfortable for guests.
